What it is
Medicare covers some diabetes supplies, including these:
- Blood glucose test strips
- Blood glucose monitor
- Lancet devices and lancets, and
- Glucose control solutions that see if test strips and monitors are accurate.
Why it is important
These supplies will help you manage your diabetes, so you will feel better.
Who is covered
People who have diabetes can have their diabetes supplies covered by Medicare.
What you pay
If you have Original Medicare, you pay 20% of the amount Medicare approves for the cost of this service — after you meet your Medicare Part B annual deductible ($147 in 2014).
IMPORTANT: As of July 1, 2013, Medicare coverage for diabetes supplies has changed. Most people with Original Medicare must use contracted suppliers in order for Medicare to provide help with coverage (read about exceptions). Using a contracted supplier will help lower your out-of-pocket costs.
If you are in a Medicare Advantage plan, check with your plan to find out if any copayments and/or a deductible apply.
