Drugs Covered and Costs

Insulin and diabetes drugs can help you control your diabetes and prevent more severe health problems. If you understand how Medicare covers them, you will be more likely to use them when you need them and save money.

Medicare's prescription drug coverage, also known as Part D, covers most diabetes drugs and the supplies you need to take.

Which diabetes drugs does Part D cover?

Some people with diabetes have to take insulin through shots or a pump. Other people with diabetes take pills or liquid drugs to control their blood sugar.

Medicare Part D covers:

  • Insulin shots
  • Diabetes drugs that adjust blood sugar

Medicare Part B covers other insulin supplies, such as blood sugar test strips.

I take insulin through a pump rather than shots. Does my coverage differ?

Yes. Your coverage is different if you get your insulin through shots. Medicare Part B covers your insulin if you take it through a pump that is worn on the outside of your body. Medicare Part B covers insulin pumps and the insulin used in them. Your doctor must order insulin pumps for you.

What will my diabetes drugs cost?

If you join a Medicare prescription drug plan, you can expect to pay:

  • A monthly premium
  • An annual deductible, though some plans do not have one
  • A copayment or coinsurance for each prescription

Costs can vary. Medicare will pay 80% of the amount approved. You will have to pay for 20%, along with your annual Medicare Part B deductible, if you still owe one.
