Getting Help With Costs

Can I get help with costs?

You may be able to get help if you cannot afford Medicare. You may qualify if you have limited income and resources. Certain programs can help pay for your premiums and out-of-pocket costs, such as deductibles and coinsurance.

Help with Part A and B costs: If you have limited income and resources, you may be able to get help paying for your Part B premium and other Medicare costs. You can get this help through a Medicare Savings Program.

Help with Part D costs: If you cannot afford a Medicare prescription drug plan, there are many programs that can help.

You may be able to get Extra Help to pay for your Medicare drug costs. Extra Help, also called the Part D low-income subsidy or LIS, is a federal program that helps people with limited income and resources pay for their Part D premiums and drug costs.

If you think you qualify for Extra Help:

  • Take the BenefitsCheckUp questionnaire to find all of your options. It is free and confidential.
  • Apply for help, even if you are slightly over the limit you need to qualify. If you need it, get personal help with applying.
  • Read and answer any letters from the government.
  • Keep your paperwork in order. Social Security and your state will review your info from time to time to see if you qualify.

What if I don’t qualify for Extra Help or Medicare Savings Programs?

There are other programs to help you save money on prescriptions. Some states have State Pharmaceutical Assistance Programs (SPAPs). Some drug manufacturers offer discounts on their brand-name drugs through Patient Assistance Programs (PAPs).

You still may be able to save money on your Medicare costs by comparing plans, and shopping around to find the best coverage for your personal situation.
