What it is:

Medicare covers some diabetes supplies, including these:

  • Blood glucose test strips
  • Blood glucose monitor
  • Lancet devices and lancets, and
  • Glucose control solutions that see if test strips and monitors are accurate.

Why it is important:

These supplies will help you manage your diabetes, so you will feel better.

Who is covered:

People with diabetes can have their diabetes supplies covered by Medicare.

What you pay:

If you have Original Medicare, you pay 20% of the amount Medicare approves for the cost of this service — after you meet your Medicare Part B annual deductible ($147 in 2013).

If you are in a Medicare Advantage plan, check with your plan to find out if any copayments and/or a deductible apply.
