Diabetes Self-Management Training

What it is:

This training teaches you how to manage your diabetes. You learn how to monitor your blood glucose, diet, exercise, and insulin.

Why it is important:

This training helps you learn how to take care of yourself. If you can control your diabetes, you will feel better. You may also have fewer medical problems and fewer hospital visits.

Who is covered:

People with Medicare at risk of complications from diabetes. This training must be requested by your doctor or other health-care provider. Ask your doctor how to get this training.

What you pay:

If you have Original Medicare, you pay 20% of the amount Medicare approves for the cost of this service — after you meet your Medicare Part B annual deductible ($147 in 2013).

If you are in a Medicare Advantage plan, check with your plan to find out if any copayments and/or a deductible apply.
